Rounding Numbers to the Nearest Ten

Finding out the multiple of ten which is nearest to the given number is called rounding of a given number to the nearest ten. Or we can say that the numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 are nearer to 0 than to 10. So, we round 1, 2, 3 and 4 as 0. Numbers 5, 6,7,8,9 are nearer to 10, so we round them off as 10.

To round off a number to the nearest ten, we proceed stepwise as follows:-

Step 1: see the one’s digit of the given number.

Step 2: if one’s digit is less than 5, replace one’s digit by 0 and keep the other digit as they are.

Step 3: if one’s is 5 or more, increase ten’s digit by 1 and replace one’s digit by 0.

Example 1: round off each of the following numbers to the nearest ten:

a) 813

b) 627

c) 3755

d) 28572

Solution: The solution is as follows

a) The given number is 813.

It’s one’s digit is 3, which is less than 5.

number line

So, replace the one’s digit by 0 and keep the other digit as they are.

Therefore, rounded number = 810

b) The given number is 627.

It’s one’s digit is 7, which is greater than 5.

number line

So, increase the tens digit by 1 and replace the one’s digit by 0.

Therefore, rounded number = 630.

c) The given number is 3755.

number line

It’s one’s digit is 5.

So, increase the tens digit by 1 and replace the one’s digit by 0.

Therefore, rounded number= 3760

d) The given number is 28572

Its ones digit is 2, which is less than 5.

number line

So, replace the one’s digit by 0 and keep the other digit as they are.

Therefore, rounded number = 28570.

Example 2: think of rounding numbers to the nearest ten. Write the numbers which can be rounded to 540.

Solution: By adopting the rule for rounding numbers to the nearest ten, we find that the numbers which can be rounded to 540 are:

535, 536, 537, 538, 539, 54, 1 542, 543, 544

Example 3: Check if the following rounding off is correct or not:

28-> 30 32->40 52->50

41->40 39->40 48->50

64->70 59->60 99->100

215->210 1453->1450 2936->2940

number 5 is rounded off to 10.

Solution: On checking the rounding off in respect of given numbers, we find that the rounding off 32->40 is wrong; it should be 32->30. And 64->70 is also incorrect it should be 64->60.

Rounding Numbers to the Nearest Hundred

Finding out the multiple of 100 which is nearest to the given number is called the rounding of the given number to the nearest hundred. Or numbers 1 to 49 are closer to 0 than 100, and so are rounded off to 00. Numbers 50 to 99 is closer to 100 than 0, and so is rounded off to 100.

To round off a number to the nearest hundred, we proceed stepwise as follows:-

Step 1: see the ten’s digit of the given number.

Step 2 : if ten’s digit is less than 5, replace each of one of ten’s digit and one’s digits by 0 and keep the other digit as they are.

Step 3: if ten’s digit is 5 or more, increase hundred’s digit by 1 and replace each digit on its right by 0.

Example 3: round off each of the following numbers to the nearest hundred:

a) 1928

b) 6686

c) 5351

d) 19614

Solution: The solution is as follows

a) The given number is 1928.

Its ten’s digit is 2, which is less than 5.

number line

So, replace each of the ten’s digit and one’s digit by 0 and keep the other digit as they are.

Therefore, rounded number = 1900

b) The given number is 6686.

Its ten’s digit is 7, which is greater than 5.

number line

So, increase the hundreds digit by 1 and replace each one of ten’s and the one’s digit by 0.

Therefore, rounded number = 6700.

c) The given number is 5351.

Its ten’s digit is 5.

number line

So, increase the hundreds digit by 1 and replace each one of the ten’s digit and one’s digit by 0.

Therefore, the rounded number = 5400.

d) The given number is 19614.

Its ten’s digit is 1, which is less than 5.

number line

So, replace each of the ten’s digit and one’s digit by 0 and keep the other digit as they are.

Therefore, rounded number = 19600.

Example 2: think of rounding to the nearest hundred. What numbers could be rounded to nearest to 1400?

Solution: clearly, all the numbers from 1350 to 1449 can be rounded to 1400.

Example 3: check if the following rounding off is correct or not:

841->800 9537->9500 49730->49700

2546->2500 286->200 5750->5800

168->200 149->100 9870->9800

Correct those which are wrong.

Solution: On checking the rounding off in respect of given numbers, we find that rounding off of 286 and 9870 in incorrect. Their correct result should be 300 and 9900 respectively.

Rounding Numbers to the Nearest Thousand

Finding out the multiple of 1000 which is nearest to the given number is called the rounding of the given number to the nearest thousand. Or numbers 1 to 499 are nearer to 0 than 1000, and so are rounded off to 000. Numbers 500 to 999 are nearer to 1000, and so are rounded off to 1000.

To round off a number to the nearest thousand, we proceed stepwise as follows:-

Step 1: see the hundred’s digit of the given number.

Step 2: if hundred’s digit is less than 5, replace each of one of hundred’s, ten’s digit and one’s digits by 0 and keep the other digit as they are.

Step 3: if hundred’s digit is 5 or more, increase thousand’s digit by 1 and replace each digit on its right by 0.

Example 3: round off each of the following numbers to the nearest thousand:

a) 7296

b) 10783

c) 11520

d) 6012

Solution:The solution is as follows:

a) The given number is 7296.

Its hundred’s digit is 2, which is less than 5.

number line

So, replace each of the hundred’s, ten’s digit and one’s digit by 0 and keep the other digit as they are.

Therefore, rounded number = 7000

b) The given number is 10783.

Its hundred’s digit is 7, which is greater than 5.

number line

So, increase the thousands digit by 1 and replace each one of hundred’s, ten’s and the one’s digit by 0.

Therefore, rounded number = 11000.

c) The given number is 11520.

Its hundred’s digit is 5.

number line

So, increase the thousands digit by 1 and replace each one of hundred’s, ten’s and the one’s digit by 0.

Therefore, rounded number = 12000.

d) The given number is 6012.

Its hundred’s digit is 0, which is less than 5.

number line

So, replace each of the hundred’s, ten’s digit and one’s digit by 0 and keep the other digit as they are.

Therefore, rounded number = 6000

Example 2: think of rounding numbers to the nearest thousand. Write the numbers which can be rounded to1 5000?

Solution: by adopting the rule for rounding numbers to the nearest thousand, we find that the numbers which can be rounded to 15000 are from 14500 to 15499.

Example 3: check the following rounding off:

2573->3000 53552->53000

6404->6000 65437->65000

7805->7000 3499->4000

Solution: on checking the rounding off in respect to given numbers, we find that the rounding off of 7805, 53552 and 3499 are incorrect. Correct results are as under.

7805->7800, 53552->54000, 3499->3000.
