Solution:

Lost can be considered  negative and gain can be considered positive.

Progress = -5 + 9 = 4 yards

Example 2:

Joseph bought 12 pens and 6 pencils costing 5 dollars each.How much did joseph pay?

Solution:

2 × (12 + 6) = 2 × 12+ 2 × 6 = 24 + 12 = 36 dollars.

Question 1: A trader pays 80 dollars for a cake maker after a discount of 15 dollars. Find the original price of the cake maker?
Solution:
Let x be the original price.

x - 15 = 80

Take +15 on both the sides

x - 15 + 15 = 80 + 15

x + 0 = 95

x = 95

The original price for cake maker is 95.

Question 2: One third a number plus 12 is 21. What is the number?
Solution:
Let x be the number. Always replace "is" with an equal sign

$(\frac{1}{3})x + 12 = 21$

$(\frac{1}{2})x + 5 - 5 = 21 -12$

$(\frac{1}{3})x = 9$

x = 27
