### Solved Examples

Question 1: The area of a rectangle is 48. One of the dimension say length is given by 12 cm. What are the dimensions of breath of the rectangle ?
Solution:
Area of the rectangle is given as 48

Area = L * B

48 = 12 * B

B = $\frac{48}{12}$

B = 4cm

Question 2: The area of a rectangle is 15 cm2. The width is two less than the length. What is the length and width of the rectangle?
Solution:
Let x be the length and let x - 2 be the width

Area = lenth × width = x × ( x - 2) = 15

x × ( x - 2) = 15

x2 + -2x = 15

x2  -2x - 15 = 0

(x - 5)(x - 3) = 0

we will consider only the positive value of x.

x = 5

The length is 5 cm and breath is 3cm.

Example 1:

The sum of two numbers is 10. The difference is 6. calculate the two numbers?

Let x be the first number. Let y be the other number

x + y = 10

x - y = 6

Solution

Let x be the first number. Let y be the second number

x + y = 10

x - y = 6

Solve the system of equations by elimination

Adding the left sides and the right sides gives:

2x = 16

x = 8

y = 2

Example 2:

The sum of two consecutive even integers is 49. What are the two numbers?

Solution

Let x be the first even integer and let x + 1 be the second integer

x + x + 1 = 49

2x + 1 = 49

2x = 48

x = 24

The other consecutive number is 25.
