# Triangular Prism

Sub Topics
When the base of the Prism is triangular in shape, the Prism is said to be Triangular Prism. A Triangular Prism has 2 triangular faces and 4 rectangular faces. It has 6 faces 2 triangular faces and 4 rectangular faces, 9 edges and 6 vertices.

The picture of a Triangular prism is as given below

The cross section of the Triangular prism is always a triangle when cut along the length.

## What is a Triangular Prism?

A triangular prism is a type of prism which is also known as three sided prism. It is a type of polyhedron having a triangle base. In a triangular prism, all the other faces looks like a Parallelogram shape.

In a triangular prism, we have five faces, six vertices and nine edges.

Here the cross section of triangular prism is a triangle shape.

In a triangular prism,

If the base of triangle is equilateral triangle then it has four planes of symmetry.

If the base of triangle is isosceles triangle then it has two planes of symmetry.

If the base of triangle is scalene triangle then it has one plane of symmetry.

## Triangular Prism Net

A net is a pattern that we can cut and fold to make a model. The net of triangular prism consists of 4 rectangles and two triangles. The bases are triangular in shape and lateral faces of the Triangular prism are rectangular in shape.

The net of the Triangular prism is as given below.

### Right Triangular Prism

If in a triangular prism, the bases are equilateral triangles and lateral faces are squares, then the triangular prism is said to be Right Triangular Prism.

## Volume of a Triangular Prism

Volume is the total area in the inner part of the solid. We can say that it is the amount of water the solid will replace when immersed in a container of water.
The volume of a triangular prism formula is given by,

V = Base area x h where and h is the height of the Triangular prism.
If the base edge and altitude of the base is given we use the formula, base area = $\frac{1}{2}$ x b x a where b is the base edge and a is the altitude of the base.

## Surface Area of a  Triangular Prism

Surface area is the total area on the outer part of the Prism.

Surface area is divided into two.

1) Lateral surface area

2) Base area

Lateral surface area is the area of the lateral faces of the Prism. Base area is the area of the base of the Prism.

The surface area of a triangular prism formula is,

Total Surface area = 2 Base area + Lateral surface area

= 2 x $\frac{1}{2}$ x b x h + h(s1 + s2 + s3)

= ba + h(s1 + s2 + s3)

where b is the base edge, a is the altitude of the base, h is the height of the prism, s1, s2, s3 are the sides of the triangle.

## Area of a Triangular Prism

A solid geometrical figure which has 4 triangular faces and base.

### Area of a Triangular Prism Formula

Area of a triangular prism = BH + (a + b + c) H

Where a, b, c are sides of triangle. B is base area. H is the height.
