# Rectangular Prism

Sub Topics When the base of the Prism is rectangular in shape, the Prism is said to be Rectangular Prism. A rectangular Prism has all rectangular faces.  It has 6 faces all rectangles, 12 edges and 8 vertices. Rectangular Prism is also known as Cuboids. The picture of a rectangular prism is as given belowThe cross section of the rectangular prism is always a rectangle when cut along the length.

## What is a Rectangular Prism?

The area of rectangular prism includes sum of its faces which includes, base, top and walls.

## Rectangular Prism Net

A net is a pattern that we can cut and fold to make a model. The net of rectangular prism consists of 6 rectangles. The bases and lateral faces of the rectangular prism are rectangular in shape.

The net of the Rectangular prism is as given below.

## Right Rectangular Prism

If in a rectangular prism, all the angles are right angles and the opposite sides are equal, then the rectangular prism is called right rectangular prism.

## Volume of a Rectangular Prism

Volume is the total area in the inner part of the solid. We can say that it is the amount of water the solid will replace when immersed in a container of water.

The formula for the volume of a Rectangular prism is given by, V = Base area x h where and h is the height of the Rectangular prism. Since Base area of a rectangle is length x width, the Volume of the rectangular prism is given by V = lwh where l is the length of the base, w is the width of the base and h is the height of the Prism.

## Surface Area of the Rectangular Prism

Surface area is the total area on the outer part of the Prism.

Surface area is divided into two.

1) Lateral surface area

2) Base area

Lateral surface area is the area of the lateral faces of the Prism. Base area is the area of the base of the Prism.

The formula for the total surface area of a Rectangular prism is

Total Surface area = 2Base area + Lateral surface area

= 2 lw + (2wh + 2lh)

= 2 (lw + wh +lh)
Where ' l ' is the length of the base, ' w ' is the width of the base and ' h ' is the height of the Prism.

## Area of Rectangular Prism

Area of rectangular prism is given by

2 x area of base + perimeter x H of base. Where ' H' is height.

2LW + 2(L + W) x H
